Lions and Leos Recycle for Sight
This is a recurring column that focuses on community service written by La Grange community Lions.
As spring-cleaning gets under way, the La Grange Noon Lions and Leo Club members are asking people to look through dresser drawers and closets for used eyeglasses and donate them to the Lions Recycle For Sight program.
On March 1-12 Lions will be collecting used prescription eyeglasses, as well as prescription and non-prescription sunglasses as part of a unique recycling program. The collected glasses will be sent to the Texas Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center (TLERC) in Midland, Texas, where donated eyeglasses are cleaned and prepared for distribution in Texas, the United States and around the world. The TLERC provides training to place recycled glasses on people in need, finishing lab technician training, pediatric vision training, basic refractive technician training, and basic optician training.
An estimated 120 million people are visually impaired because of uncorrected refractive errors (far and near sightedness). Almost all cases can be corrected and normal vision can be restored with eyeglasses, contact lenses or refractive surgery. If you know of a child in our community who needs assistance with prescription glasses, contact a La Grange Lion’s Club member.
To donate used glasses, place them in the specially marked Lions Recycle For Sight collection boxes. Drop off locations include:
