Liberty Matters - The County's Most Precious Resource?

Land is a gift from God, granted when He gave mankind dominion over the earth. Did you know that three of the four faces on Mount Rushmore were land surveyors? My favorites are Washington and Jefferson, both county surveyors from an early age. It is no coincidence they understood land and its importance to liberty and government. The founding fathers were not merely bold visionaries, but also land owners. Maintenance of the land records and the regulation of subdivisions are vital county functions and citizens interact with and rely upon land daily.

I have studied subdivision, land, easement and case law. I have surveyed in many dozens of counties, researched in their county clerk offices (ours is one of the finest) and appraisal districts, reviewed dozens of subdivision and zoning ordinances, and tax maps. I have worked with hundreds of land men, realtors, escrow officers and title attorneys, and visited with thousands of land owners. I have surveyed tens of thousands of acres, miles of creeks, rivers, roads and pipelines, studied hundreds of thousands of land patents, deeds, easements, partitions, maps, wills and restrictions. I have mapped flood zones, utilities, refineries, oil & gas wells, ranches and even an aircraft carrier.

Land is the most precious resource in the county besides its citizens and land subdivision is one of the few areas the county has regulatory authority. It is important that our next county judge have a comprehensive working knowledge of all aspects related to land ownership, subdivision regulation, easements and development.
