LGISD Superintendent Updates School Board On Start of Year Figures
Superintendent Andy McHazlett gave an update of the first weeks of the school year and the first attendance report of the 2026-27 school year at Monday night’s meeting.
He was happy to report that the district started the year will 100% professional certified staff. Many districts across the state had to start will long-term substitutes as teaching positions were not all filled.
The current total enrollment for the district is 1,794. By campus this breaks down as: Elementary School - 885 Middle School - 295 High School - 614 The district is monitoring the enrollment numbers and if the downward trend contin- ues, it could affect staffing.
He also told the board of a change in the focus of the LEPS Foundation. When the LEPS Foundation was originally formed, the focus was the construction of the new Leopard Stadium. The focus now will be student support and student outcomes. He emphasized that this means academic success.
Assistant Superintendent Stacy Eilers told the board of upcoming staff inservice days. The next one will be Sept. 25, followed by Oct. 16 and Nov. 13. She also said that the campus open houses were all well attended.
She gave an update on the Little Leps afterschool care program. There are currently 47 students enrolled in the program and there is a cap of 50.
Director of Operations Sharon Muzny reported that the district was able to purchase two used handicap accessible buses from a district in north Texas for a cost of less than $10,000.
There are some new faces for the 2026-27 school year at LGISD.
William Lee Davis - high school assistant principal Madyson Hurst - high school ag science teacher Roger Maupin - high school softball coach Billie Munoz - elementary special education teacher Abigail Roscher - elementary special education teacher Myra Dela Rosa has transferred from the high school nurse to the district nurse.
Paraprofessional hires include: Patricia Castillo - elementary educational aide, Melina Cuellar Contreras elementary educational aide, Karen Michelle Hamm high school educational aide, Courtney Muske - school nurse, Camille Stephens - after school care counselor, and Patrick Troutt - bus operator.
Maria Orona is no longer working for the district in transportation.
