LG Council Still on Trail of Rooster

The noisy rooster on the south side of La Grange was among the topics of conversation at Monday’s City Council meeting. To be fair, there wasn’t much else on the agenda.

Readers may recall a La Grange Police report from the week of Christmas regarding a rooster that keeps waking up a resident on Washington Street.

“You wouldn’t believe how many people ask me about that rooster,” Police Chief David Gilbreath told the City Council.

Mayor Janet Moerbe, who lives in the neighborhood, said she believes the early bird comes from a coop on Milam Street. Moerbe said the chickens sometimes hop over a short fence and scratch around in her yard. She said she often sees the rooster in the yard of an unoccupied home nearby.

“He’s got his own house?” asked Councilman Ken Taylor.

“Oh yeah, and he’s got a bunch of chickens following him around, too,” Moerbe said.

Moerbe said she doesn’t mind the rooster’s crowing, but she said he does seem to get vocal at odd times of the day.

Moerbe said she thought she identified the rooster one day outside, and she ran to get a camera to take a “suspect photo” for the police department.

“But then my husband Harvey went to look at it and he said it was a hen,” the mayor said in an interview on Wednesday. “I guess I don’t know chickens that well.”

At Monday’s meeting, everyone enjoyed a good laugh during the discussion.

“It’s good that we’ve got things like this we can laugh at in La Grange, and not some of the problems happening elsewhere,” Gilbreath said at the meeting.

“I think everyone needs something to laugh about these days,” Moerbe said in the interview.
