Leman Lists Priorities for Upcoming Session
The Texas Legislature is scheduled to gavel in its 87th session on Jan. 12. Rep. Ben Leman, who represents Fayette County in House District 13, recently gave the Record some of his thoughts and priorities for the upcoming session.
“This legislative session will considerably be different from the last legislative session given the new challenges associated with COVID-19,” Leman said. However, my agenda is focused on continuing to expand upon the conservative principles the constituents of House District 13 expect. This session, I will be directing my attention to various pieces of legislation that will focus on protecting property owner rights and our 2nd amendment rights.”
Leman said he also plans to file legislation related to children in foster care, helping the state’s manufacturing industry and preventing human trafficking, Leman said he also plans to file “a pro-life bill that closes a reporting loophole that misleads people about the dangers of abortion.”
“As legislation comes across my desk, the first question I ask myself is will this bill further our individual liberties and freedom in Texas or not?” Leman said. “My goal is that once the 87th Legislative Session is complete, the burdens of our state government will have been reduced and that Texans will feel a greater sense of freedom.”
State Senator Lois Kolkhorst, who also represents Fayette County, recently filed a pair of bills that would ensure in-person family visits for Texans living in nursing facilities. The bills would allow nursing home residents to appoint one or more essential caregivers. Those caregivers would have to submit to coronavirus testing and strict safety protocols. But they would be guaranteed access to their loved one living in a nursing home.
Leman said he supports this legislation.
“During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen the negative effects on loved ones when a family member or caregiver is not able to maintain contact or visit.” Leman said. “In July I joined many of my colleagues in asking the Texas Health & Human Services Commission to allow for such visits. I will continue to support establishing the right of families to designate an essential caregiver, during times of state emergencies and therefore support the bills mentioned above.”
