La Grange Council Talks Movies, Paving & HEB
Movie Nights on the Square are coming back to La Grange.
Last Monday, La Grange City Council unanimously approved a request from La Grange Main Street to close down the parking lot on the north side of the Square to show movies on three evenings this summer: Friday, June 4, Friday, June 18 and Friday, July 16.
Last year, due to COVID restrictions, Main Street moved movie nights to Fairgrounds, where they set up a drive-in theater.
“This is a positive thing, to be back on the Square,” said La Grange City Manager Shawn Raborn at the meeting.
Paula Vogel, who heads up the Movie Nights program, said Main Street has not yet selected which movies they will show.
“We’re going to be going on Facebook to poll people about what they want to see,” Vogel told the Record.
In other news from the Monday night meeting, Raborn presented to Council a list of streets that the City plans to repave with chip seal this year. Those streets are as follows:
• E. Crockett from Jefferson to Monroe
• E. Lowerline from Jefferson to Jackson
• E. Milam from Jefferson to Vail
• E. Walnut from Jefferson to Vail
• E. Pecan from Jefferson to Vail
• E. Cedar from Jefferson to Jackson
• E. Live Oak from Jefferson to Jackson
• E. Eblin from Jefferson to Vail
• S. Madison from Travis to the end of the street
• S. Monroe from Travis to Live Oak
• S. Meyer from Milam to Eblin
• S. Jackson from Eblin to Milam
• S. Franklin from Eblin to Travis.
The project will amount to 114,641 sq. yards of paving at an estimated cost of $149,033.30. The City will seek bids from contractors to perform the work.
In addition, Raborn said the City plans to widen the corner of Vail and Travis Street near La Grange Elementary to accommodate school buses turning at that corner.
“The school district reached out to us, and we’re going to soften that corner, because the buses can’t make that corner,” Raborn said.
Furthermore, Raborn said the City plans to cover Beefhead Ditch next to HEB, which will allow for a planned expansion to the grocery store. After that project is complete, the City plans to rebuild Jackson Street along Beefhead Ditch and the west side of the La Grange Elementary Campus.
“All this ties together,” Raborn said. “There’s a lot we’re going to have to tear up in town, but it’s all going to be OK in the end. Progress is hard.”
Raborn said the City aims to repave streets every seven years.
