Identity, More Details Released From Fatal Interstate Standoff

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office released the name of the man who died last Thursday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a standoff on Interstate 10.

According to a report from Lt. David Beyer of the Sheriff’s Office, 26-year-old Jodeci Moses of Bowling Green, Kentucky, took his own life after officers deployed CS gas in an attempt to end the six-hour standoff.

“It wasn’t the outcome we wanted,” Beyer said.

The ordeal began in the early morning hours last Thursday, March 25, when a Harris County Pct. 5 Deputy Constable found Moses inside a car that was stopped in the middle of a roadway. Moses sped away when the deputy tried contacting him. Moses led multiple law enforcement agencies on a 95-mile chase west of Houston on Interstate 10. Moses allegedly shot at officers out of his window during the pursuit.

The chase entered Fayette County around 4:19 a.m. By that time, Moses was driving on his car’s rims after law enforcement successfully spiked his tires in Colorado County. Moses stopped the car about a mile west of Schulenburg.

Beyer said officers pleaded with Moses to give himself up before releasing the gas.

“We were able to make phone contact with him,” Beyer said. “We got family members to talk with him on the phone. We had a hostage negotiator talking with him.”

Shortly before 9 a.m., the Austin-Fayette County Special Response Team deployed the gas.

“We made the determination to go in with non-lethal force, even after he shot at officers,” Beyer said.

Beyer said Moses shot himself after the gas was deployed.

“We did everything we could to get him out of that car,” Beyer said. “He finally told us, ‘Y’all come get me.’ We thought he might be ready to give himself up, so that’s when we moved. But then he did what he did.”
