Habitat Project Clears Hurdle

Fayette County Habitat for Humanity cleared the first hurdle in an effort to build affordable rental housing for people ages 55 and older.

The La Grange City Council unanimously approved a request from Habitat to rezone property at the corner of Upperline and Camp Street from residential to R-1. The change will allow Habitat to move forward with plans to build 10 small cottage homes on the property. Fayette County Habitat Executive Director Kenny Couch told the Council at the meeting that residents would have to be 55 or older to qualify for one of the homes. The residents would pay a monthly lease to live in the homes, but lease prices have not yet been determined. Couch said the property would operate under non-profit management.

Each of the one bedroom, one bathroom homes would be restricted to single individuals or couples, Couch said. Couch said Habitat has not set a timeline for construction. Prices for lumber are currently at record highs. Couch said the organization may wait for a break in prices before beginning construction.
