Gunshot Bounces Back and Hits Man

A man target shooting in the Winchester area suffered a gunshot wound from a ricocheted bullet last month.

The incident happened on Nov. 9. Investigator Jeremy Castleberry with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office said a group of people were shooting steel targets on private property when the incident occurred.

One individual was shooting a pistol at a target about 15 to 20 feet away, Castleberry said. The rest of the group was about 20 feet behind the shooter. The bullet struck the target and ricocheted behind the shooter. It struck one of the men in the group in the chest. The wound was not life-threatening, he said.

Fayette County EMS also responded and transported the wounded man for treatment.

“The good thing was that they had a safety briefing before they started,” Castleberry said. “Everybody knew what they needed to do, and they immediately called 911.”

The wounded man was expected to make a full recovery.
