Former Smithville Mayor Faces Fayette Co. Charges
Former Smithville Mayor Scott Saunders was arrested in Fayette County Thursday, June 24, on two counts of sexual assault.
Saunders, 35, was previously arrested May 10 for sexual assault of a minor in Bastrop County. The Texas Rangers are investigating the latest charges filed in Fayette County.
“As this is an active and ongoing investigation,” said Ericka Miller, press secretary for the Texas Department of Public Safety. “No additional information is available at this time.”
Saunders resigned as the mayor of Smithville Jan. 11, just two months after he won re-election to the office. At the time, he told the Austin American-Statesman newspaper that he wanted to “focus on my family, my small business, and my personal life.”
