Fire Causes Major Damage to Home
A three-alarm fire on Guettermann Ehler Road south of O’Quinn sustained major damage from a fire on Tuesday, June 1.
Schulenburg Volunteer Fire Department and Flatonia Fire and Rescue responded initially. They later called Muldoon Volunteer Fire Department for a tanker truck to bring extra water.
Schulenburg Fire Chief Jeff Proske said the fire appears to have started from an electrical problem in the home’s garage.
The fire spread to half of the main section of the dog run structure and an attached wing. Proske estimated that half or more of the home could be salvaged.
A construction contractor working on a pool house on the property called in the call fire around 11:20 a.m. after noticing smoke coming from the main house.
The garage burned to the ground by the time the first firefighters arrived. More than two dozen firefighters from the three departments battled the blaze for most of the afternoon.
Proske said the homeowners live out of town, but they spent the weekend at the place and left Monday around 3 p.m. No one was inside the home when the fire started.
Fayette County EMS responded, and no one was injured. Fayette County Emergency Management Chief Craig Moreau also responded. Proske wished to thank Moreau for bringing lunch to the firefighters as they fought the blaze.
