Fayetteville ISD Receives $4,000 Donation
On behalf of the Fayetteville Cycling Club and the Good Old Time Summer Classic Bicycle Ride, Yvonne McCowen presented Fayetteville ISD Superintendent Jeff Harvey with two checks totaling $4,000 on March 1. Fayetteville ISD athletics received $2,400 and $1,600 was donated to the Fayetteville Education Foundation. The donation was made possible by local ride sponsors, a raffle of unique vintage bicycles donated by Steve Bauserman and the registration fees from over 150 riders who participated in the delayed Good Old Summer Classic held on Nov. 15 last year. We’re grateful to everyone that made this possible. Over $100,000 has been raised since the annual ride began and we look forward to many more years.
The goal this year is to hold the ride on the first Sunday in June, the same date it had been held for over 20 years. Everyone in the community is encouraged to join in. Sidewalk Improvement Grant
The City of Fayetteville has been approved for a $330,000 grant for sidewalk improvements on the square. The project was competitively bid in January and a contract was awarded to M & C Fonseca. The city will spend an additional $70,000. These funds are included in the current city budget and are offset by a $35,000 grant from the Economic Development Corporation.
The scope of the work involves replacing the majority of the sidewalks in and on the square, maintaining as much of the historical appearance as possible while bringing access up to American Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. Every attempt is being made to complete the work on a 120-day work schedule without disruption to business or events.
Construction was scheduled to begin Wednesday, March 3, beginning with replacing all sidewalks in the grassy area of the square around the courthouse, the old fire station and gazebo. The plan is to complete this before Fayetteville holds Antiques on the Square beginning March 22, when construction will stop temporarily. Work will commence sometime early the week of April 5. Then beginning on N. Live Oak St, existing sidewalks will be demolished and new sidewalks, curbs and steps built. ADA ramps and handrails will be installed where required. A concrete finish will match appearance of existing aged concrete. All notable marks, signatures, etc. in the existing sidewalks will be placed in the new work Work will be performed in sections, 100 ft. or less at a time, so only a portion of the square frontage will be affected at any one time.
Jacob Mikeska, project manager with Weishuhn Engineering, will be on site every day construction is underway. Each building owner will be made fully aware of when and what work will be performed in their area of the square via regular email blasts. Fayetteville Brethren Church
Note the new start time at a parking lot service held by Fayetteville Brethren Church on Saturday, March 13 at 10 a.m. The service will be led by Rev. Mike Groseclose. All are welcome. In-person services will not be held until further notice so if attending, please stay in your vehicle. Fayetteville Brethren, located at 1022 Kramr Rd., holds services the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. The Unity of the Brethren has several Sunday worship services available online. Fayetteville Picking Park
It was too cold to jam in February so coming up in March, all levels of pickers will continue the tradition of live, acoustic bluegrass jamming in the square.
