Fayetteville Holds April Forum for Candidates
During the City Council Meeting on Wednesday, April 14, the City gave notice to submit a Texas Community Block Grant Program application for a Community Development Fund grant request of $350,000. The improvements are requested specifically for the upgrade to the existing aerobic system to ensure that the City meets the requirements of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality Standard Permits for a city the size of Fayetteville. The City considered and passed a resolution authorizing the expenditure.
Mayor Carl Marino stated it isn’t a requirement by law for a city this size to post approved meeting minutes to the city website. The request was brought up again that it’s a matter of transparency that the information be publicized, just as the agendas are posted for upcoming meetings. It will remain a priority.
The City Council voted to transition Jacqueline Brown from the role of Deputy City Secretary to City Secretary and empowered her to perform all required duties of her new position. Janice Coufal Wasut, former City Secretary, will be departing May 3.
For the first time in a very long time, there is only one incumbent running in the upcoming election for the City of Fayetteville. For this reason, and due to the rising interest in the candidates platforms, a small group of voters created a candidate public forum on Sunday, April 18. All six candidates were given the opportunity to inform Fayetteville residents where they stand on pertinent issues. The gazebo in the square served as the perfect stage for mayoral candidates Mike Stroup and Deb Dahlberg Rowland and city council candidates Cade Burks, Steve Pavlicek, Glenda Sue Merritt and Emil Knodell.
The well-attended event was informative and amiable.
They were presented with questions gathered from the voting community and vetted by Lisa Simpson who served as moderator.
Action Committee
The Fayetteville 18-Wheeler Action Committee provided the background information required so Judge Weber could continue to take steps to resolve the 18-wheeler issue in Fayetteville. The judge presented to the Senate Committee on Transportation Wednesday, April 21. If Senate Bill 1053 (relating to commercial motor vehicle restrictions in certain counties) passes, the judge could ban through truck traffic on FM 955. Jerry Kubala Honored
Members of American Legion Shelby Post 602 honored Jerry Kubala with a Past Commander pin and a tie pin with the American Legion emblem. He recently stepped down as Post Commander, handing the role over to Calvin Coufal.
The tribute was an expression of gratitude for his many years of dedication and service. From attending hundreds of funeral services, to ensuring everyone remained on point, Kubala served as a true inspiration to members and remains a highly respected advocate for patriotism within the Fayetteville community.
New Community Residents
New Fayetteville residents Beth and Jim Rushing recently moved from Galveston to Fayetteville on March 23. They have already embraced our small community and we wish them a very warm welcome.
Fayetteville ISD News
Fayetteville ISD will be sponsoring a book fair running April 23 through April 30 in the school library. Come shop between 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
Fayetteville boys won the area track meet while the Fayetteville girls got second place overall at the area meet in Runge on April 12. The top four in each event will advance to the regional meet at Challenger Stadium in League City on April 23-24.
Congratulations to the District 11 4-H Food Challenge winners: The Simmer Down team of Logan Poncik, Harper Mau, and Addie Kibby placed first in the Junior/Intermediate Side Dish. “2 Hot 2 Handle” team members Karson Corn, Cash Smith, Mackenzie Poncik and Copper Mau placed second in the Senior Main Dish.
Bluebonnet Sightings
More bountiful bluebonnet sightings around here….at the Fruge home on 3535 FM 955 next to the boat stalls, the flowers are prolific. An admirer took a photo, created a postcard and sent it as a thank you note to the homeowners. You’re welcome to take photos but please don’t go over the fence. And so you know, you can’t pull bluebonnets in full bloom, plant them with any result. Plant just the seeds. Thank you Grace Fruge.
