Fayetteville Artist Kathy Callaway Opens Exhibit at ARTS, Reception Set Sept. 11

Take a walk on the wild side with Kathy Callaway as she opens her exhibit Palette Play at Arts for Rural Texas on Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. The artist is a longtime resident of Fayetteville and speaks of the elements of nature found in the region. Callaway offers the gifts of nature and in doing so shows them with a unique vision. Each piece expresses energy and movement, Mother Nature – alive and well.

The watercolors fancifully dance with color and patterns as the artist twists and turns her way through playful compositions. The viewer is teased with dots and lines, splashes of color and intriguing textures that say, “I’m real. I’m not real. What do you see?” Callaway’s Synthesist style takes you from the familiar to the unknown reminiscent of Post-Impressionists artists. Her often repetitive, exploratory brushwork goes beyond rendering to inviting the viewer to see the object in a new way. Her paintings speak of the outward appearance of natural forms while clearly speaking about the spirit of the subject. The paintings are filled with color, line, and form, expressing the artist interest in expressing shape and edge.

This might be influenced by her years as a sculptor. Callaway has worked in bronze for years. Originally sculpted in clay, each piece is later poured in bronze to create the final sculpture. Included in the exhibit are some of her sculptures where patrons can see the forms echoed in her paintings, the interweaving of two-dimensional and three-dimensional artwork merging.

Palette Play will be on exhibit through Oct. 16 at the Ross Gallery at Arts for Rural Texas, 114 North Live Oak in Fayetteville. Kathy Callaway will be at the artist’s reception to visit with all that attend on Sept. 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. The reception is free and is open to the public.
