The Fayette County Retired Teachers Association met Monday, Oct. 13, at the New Life Methodist Church in La Grange with eighteen members in attendance. Members enjoyed a special presentation from TRTA District 13 president Joe Ramirez.

Mr. Ramirez spoke to members about proposed changes to TRTA, including the Virtual House of Representatives, which allows all twenty state districts to participate through teleconferencing at District meetings. He also discussed the proposed increase in state dues, which will fund advertising and technological innovation to increase membership.

The business portion of the meeting included approval of the September minutes, the Treasurer’s report presented by Chris Morrison, and a discussion of the upcoming field trip in November to commemorate Veteran’s Day in Praha. Volunteer Committee Services chair Joan Miertschin urged members to have their volunteer totals for the January meeting.

Chris Morrison reminded members that November is Foundation Month for the Texas Retired Teachers Foundation, and all funds collected go to assist not only retired educators in need but also fund educational projects and provide grants to teachers. FCRTA members are asked to make their donations on or before Nov. 22.

Carolyn West, Member Benefits Chair, discussed improvements in insurance, including the benefits of the U-Card, which assists retirees in purchasing over the counter medicines and supplies.

The member retention prize was won by Carolyn West, and Karen Fitch won the Book Raffle Prize.
