Fayette County Record Crowned State’s Top Semi-Weekly Newspaper

For just the second time in its recent memory, The Fayette County Record has been crowned the top semi-weekly newspaper in the state.

At the Texas Press Association’s 2021 Better Newspaper Awards ceremony Saturday in Denton, The Fayette County Record was named the state’s top large semi-weekly newspaper, winning the Sweepstakes Award, for placing higher in more categories than any other similar publication.

Judging was done by the Wisconsin Press Association and work judged was from September 2019-December 2020.

The Record earned 725 points, beating second place Wise County Messenger of Decatur, which earned 650 points.

Among the specific awards the Record won were:

• First place in Advertising Design for work done by John Castaneda.

• First Place in Column Writing for work done by Jeff Wick.

• First Place Special Section for the Vine and Stein magazine, directed by Regina Keilers, Becky Weise and Lindsey Fojtik.

• First Place in Feature Photography for work done by Andy Behlen, Terry Hagerty, Darrell D. Gest and Jeff Wick.

• First place in News Photography for work done by Andy Behlen and Jeff Wick.

• First Place in Sports Photography for work done by Jeff Wick.

• Second Place in Feature Writing for work done by Jeff Wick

• Second Place in News Writing for work done by Andy Behlen.

• Third Place in Page Design

• Third Place in Community Service for a series we did spotlighting student mental health.

• Third place in Online Live Coverage for a football video feature by Emma Allbritton

• Second Place in Public Notice Reporting for work done by Andy Behlen.

• Fourth Place in Headline Writing

“This newspaper is a reflection of this community, so the sweepstakes honor is something all of Fayette County can and should take pride in for being a part of,” said editor Jeff Wick. “I think it’s especially neat that we’ll head into the start of our 100th continuous year of publication this November as the reigning top semi-weekly newspaper in Texas.”
