Devon Boehnke Celebrates Birthday
Devon Boehnke celebrated his 81 birthday with his daughter and son in law, Dana and Darrell Kulak along with James, Bobby and I at LaCabana in Smithville. He enjoyed a meal of Mexican food and then had Happy Birthday sang to him.
Recovering From Freeze
Many in the area are out and about assessing the damage done by the arctic freeze. There are lots of reports of frozen pipes that are being repaired. Neighbors have been reaching out and helping neighbors. This is when a small community can really shine and knowing your neighbors can really help you out when you need help. Help fixing fence, to help with cattle or help fixing a broken pipe. Neighbors have reached out to one another and made sure everyone was OK. This is also the time to reach out to your senior neighbors to make sure they are doing OK.
Ice and snow also took a toll on the local cattle and wildlife. Cattle are slowly recovering from the shock of such cold weather. Reports of a loss of a few calves from the frigid temperatures have come in, but overall most cattle made it. Some of the wild animals that took a hit were the wild hogs. Several were hit along the roadsides. They also have started back going into the traps. Local hog hunter Chris Joplin has taken thirty one in the last few weeks.
Nancie Blair was in Houston with her new great granddaughter when the storm hit. After they lost electricity Billy Blair took off and retrieved his family and brought them back to Muldoon where they stayed warm and had water the whole time.
Reed Rightmer came home from Houston to help his parents Clay and Jennifer Rightmer get cows feed and watered. And to help with some repairs that were needed after the crazy cold weather.
Following a week of delayed work due to the snow, the railroad is continuing work in and around the area. Watch out for men and vehicles along the side of the roads.
Pine Oak Cemetery
A dedicated little group of volunteers have taken on the project of improving the graves of some of those laid to rest in Pin Oak Cemetery. John Coopedge and his wife Susan have been the driving force to put up wrought iron fencing around the two Texas Army Soldiers’ graves, who fought at the Battle of Salado. The group is hard at work to improve and not let those who fought for Texas be forgotten. These improvements should be finished in a few days of hard work.
