Cyclist Hit, Killed in Hallettsville

On Wednesday, Sept. 1, Daniel Gutierrez suffered major injuries when he was struck by a vehicle, while riding his bicycle on the 1300 block of N. Texana St. in Hallettsville. Gutierrez’ injuries resulted in him being airlifted to St. David’s South in Austin, where he was in a coma for approximately a week. Unfortunately, Gutierrez succumbed to his injuries Monday, Sept. 20.
The Lavaca County Commissioners’ Court met in a regular meeting Monday morning and signed a proclamation designating the week of Oct. 3-9 as National 4-H Week in Texas.
New Ulm Enterprise
The New Ulm Oktoberfest will be held at the New Ulm Fireman’s Park on Oct. 9. The fun begins at 10 a.m. and lasts until 5 p.m. Throughout the day festival goers will be able to browse through the vendor area to purchase arts, crafts and other goods from local vendors.
Sunday, Sept. 26, the Industry Junior Girl Scouts Troop 1001 completed their bronze award project. The girls raised funds for and assembled a new piece of playground equipment.

The Bellville Independent School District’s board of trustees voted unanimously to approve a service agreement with Huckabee Architects for the renovation of the former Wells Fargo building on the Bellville square. The building will house a number of student programs and the school’s business office.
The Bellville Independent School District hopes to put a big grant to big use. During Thursday night’s meeting Chief Academic Officer Natalie Jones reported that BISD has received a Texas COVID Learning Acceleration Supports Grant.

Gonzales Independent School District will continue it’s policy of not allowing visitors on campuses “until further notice” while COVID-19 numbers remain high in the local community — with some exceptions. District board members voted unanimously to keep the policy in place until the district’s Health Advisory Committee, as well as local physicians and the chief of staff at Gonzales Healthcare Systems, advise it is safe to allow visitation again.
The Gonzales County Sheriff’s Office recently announced the hiring of a new chief deputy. Sheriff Keith Schmidt who was appointed sheriff on Sept. 16 to replace the late Sheriff Robert Ynclan, announced that former Pt. 1 Deputy Constable Dennis Jahns has replace former Chief Deputy Chris Aviles, the decision came on Sept. 17.

DeWitt County Commissioners enacted a burn ban at their Monday meeting, effective Sept. 28. The burn ban will last for 90 days unless the county judge of commissioners rescind the ban.
Since early summer the City of Yoakum, in partnership with its vendor, Ameresco Inc/RTS has been implementing the installation of an automated meter program for the City water and electric meters.

Perfect Game, the “world’s largest and most comprehensive youth and most comprehensive youth baseball and softball scouting organization,” and the City of Cedar Park jointly announced Thursday that the company plans to build its new headquarters in Cedar Park and construct a massive sports complex to host national and regional amateur baseball and softball tournaments.
Leander has experienced at least nine coronavirus deaths since the start of the pandemic. A total of 13 Williamson County coronavirus deaths, including these deaths, were not previously reported in the County for more than a year due to a reporting error in the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) geocoding system.

Washington County Commissioners approved the payment of hotel occupancy tax (HOT) funds to different tourism entities throughout the county on Tuesday during it’s meeting. The court awarded $23,400 of the $53,281 requested HOT funds to six different organizations.
Brenham Police Department was dispatched at 10:02 p.m. Monday to the 100 block of South St. Charles Street in reference to a report of a weaponinvolved situation. During the investigation, BPD revealed that Hans Obenhoff, 26, of Brenham brandished a weapon at two individuals who delivered food to Obenhoff’s residence.
Washington County Judge John Durrenberger has announced his intention to seek a second term in office. One of his priorities when he took office was to strategically utilize the knowledge of county employees, partners and neighbors.

The Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM), in partnership with Victoria County, the Victoria Office of Emergency Management, Victoria ISD and the Golden Crescent Regional Advisory Council, opened a COVID-19 infusion center in Victoria last week, Wednesday, Sept. 22.
The number of active COVID-19 cases for Lavaca and surrounding counties continued to decline this past week with all counties showing a decline in estimated active cases, except for DeWitt, who had the same count as last week.
