County Road and Bridge Year-End Reports
Precinct One (submitted by Commissioner Jason McBroom)
This year we reworked 5.6 miles of paved road, seal coated 2.07 miles of paved road, added gravel to 3.53 miles of road.
St. James Church Road – Reworked 5,285 feet of paved road and seal coated 3,960 feet of pavement
Old Plum Hwy – Reworked 13,135 feet of paved road
Muzny Lane – Reworked 2,006 feet of paved road
Machala Lane – Reworked 792 feet of paved road
Drisdale Road – Reworked 735 feet of paved road and seal coated 3,265 feet of pavement
W. Old Lockhart Road – Reworked 7,615 feet of pavement
Pine Lane – Added gravel to 570 feet of road
Pietsch Lane – Added gravel to 800 feet of road
Catfish Lane – Added gravel to 1,550 feet of road
Pin Oak Branch – Added gravel to 685 feet of road
Jurk Road – Added gravel to 755 feet of road
Fisher Loop – Added gravel to 6,200 feet of road
Bell Settlement Road – Added gravel to 4,300 feet of road
Greenscreek Road – Added gravel to 3,775 feet of road
Windy Hill Lane – Seal coted 3,700 feet of road
Bridge Work: TX DOT completed the bridge on Mueller Road and Piney Creek Road. We completed the bridge on Pine Ridge Lane (which was our last Hurricane Harvey project). Precinct One has started a bridge project on Old Plum Hwy which should finish up in January 2021. The bridge project on Old Plum Hwy. should help get water out of East side of Plum area. This should also prevent water from backing up onto Highway 71 during large rain events.
Summary: Precinct One accomplished a lot of road repairs and maintenance in the year 2020. We will continue to improve the quality and safety of our County roads and bridges for the future. Oil Exploration is still continuing in Precinct one which is causing a lot of road damage on our County roads. The companies have been helping restore the damage to the roads once the drilling has finished. We look forward to continue to keep improving our County roads and bridges in the year to come.
Precinct 2 (submitted by Commissioner Luke Sternadel)
With this past year being so different and challenging for so many, Fayette County Precinct 2 was very fortunate in many ways.
My amazing crew worked straight through the year to see that some roads got base hauled on them, set up and paved, along with existing paved roads being redone from time to time.
We also started hauling road base on some roads to be paved in the future. We replaced numerous culvert pipes to better handle water flow, including low water crossings.
We increased our road sign program to make the roadways safer. All the roadways were mowed three times this year instead of our usual two times.
We completed a major project on Gebhard Road where Cummins Creek changed course during hurricane Harvey and almost took part of the road. The County worked with NRCS and contractors to rebuild it to prevent the loss of Gebhard Road.

Precinct 3 (submitted by Commissioner Harvey Berckenhoff)
In 2020, 10.8 miles of existing roads were hauled out with limestone, rebuilt and paved:
3.1 miles of West Burke Road
2.1 miles of Kainer Road
1.6 miles of Smith-Marek
Double Gate Lane
4.0 miles Jeddo Road had a chip seal.
Bridge replacement and upgrading deteriorated culvert pipes is always an ongoing process.
This year the 20’ grated bridge on Farek-Loth road was replaced by a 30’ concrete bridge.
We made repairs and upgrades on the Parkerville bridge, Old Hallettesville bridge and the Culvert Crossing on Rauder Road.
We built a 25’ x 60’ addition to the precinct warehouse. The concrete slab was contracted out but the addition was erected by the precinct crew.
We replaced our 1988 international water truck with a used chassis and a new 2,000 gallon Niece water tank – a much needed upgrade. An enormous amount of material was added to our roads, brush continues to be cut. Shredding is always a challenge and with 261 miles of road, trying to shred them 3 times a year takes a lot of time and man power. I appreciate all of the hard work my crew does for me and the citizens of Precinct 3.

Precinct 4 (submitted by Commissioner Tom Muras)
The end of the year 2020 is finally here. On the whole it was a tough year for this Precinct 4, this County, this State, this Country, and the World. But, the fact that we were all in this together, made it possible to make it through.
As far as Fayette County Precinct 4 is concerned, we were able to accomplish a lot that needed to be taken care of. The road and bridge workers did a great job with several roads needing improvement. We were able to totally rework several roads to make them what the people of this precinct and county needed, and many thankful comments and phone calls were received thanking my workers for the good job. The inventory will show about 21 miles of road that received a complete reworking including the addition of material to the road base to blend into the existing base along with new pavement to insure a long life into the future.
There are still a few roads that will need reworking this next year, and we are making plans for added base and other additions that will bring the entire Precinct 4 road inventory to a very acceptable state.
We have had a good year, considering what we all have had to go through that made 2020 a year that will be remembered not in a good light.
On the recycling side, it has also been a great year for this county and its workers, and the citizens who frequent our facilities. The men at the La Grange site have been doing a tremendous job. Good comments from people who recycle at the La Grange facility have continued to pour in continuously. Most comments say that better help could not be found, and their visits to the facility are most enjoyable.
The workers at our Schulenburg site also fit in the same category as they also do a great job, and people grade their visits very good there also.
The news about my retirement is out, and I really need to thank all for their help through the last 30 years. I want to thank all the workers through the years that have made this job as Commissioner of Fayette County Precinct 4 a lot easier and enjoyable.
I also need to thank all the good people of Fayette County for your support in making the last 30 years so rewarding and wonderful. This job was a “Blessing” for both myself and my family and I can’t think of any better way to have spent all those years. Many times as I walked up to the Courthouse, I would look up and feel how fortunate I was with having this job.
