County Approves Courthouse Use for Juneteenth, Taste of LG Events

At a meetings last Thursday, Fayette County Commissioners Court approved a pair of requests from local organizations to the use the Courthouse Square for two upcoming events: The La Grange Juneteenth Celebration scheduled for June 12 and a new event, The Taste of La Grange, scheduled for Nov. 6.

Juneteenth organizer Verlia Mosely wrote a letter to the Commissioners requesting to use the square for the Juneteenth Celebration. Juneteenth celebrates the day of June 19, 1865, when slaves in Texas learned that they were free. The day falls on a Saturday this year, but organizers of the La Grange event decided to celebrate it a week earlier, on June 12.

The celebration on the Square that day will take place from noon to 1 p.m. and later from 5 to 10 p.m. Commissioners approved the request by a vote of 4-0. Pct. 1 Commissioner Jason McBroom was absent from the meeting.

In a related matter, Commissioners and County Judge Joe Weber signed a proclamation designating June 19 as Emancipation Day in Fayette County. Weber read the proclamation at Thursday’s meeting.

Also at the meeting, Commissioners approved a request from the La Grange Area Chamber of Commerce to host the Taste of La Grange event on the Square on Saturday, Nov. 6. Chamber Director Jamie Fabre said the event will include local food offerings, a biergarten, live music by the Black Cat Choir, shopping, arts and crafts and more.
