City of Ellinger To Borrow Money From County for First Election

The newly-formed City of Ellinger needs to hold an election on May 1, but it doesn’t have any money to pay for it yet. Voters will decide on May 1 whether the new city should impose a one-cent sales tax. For now, though, the City is broke.

Fayette County Commissioners agreed to lend the City a helping hand for this election. At a meeting last Thursday, Commissioners voted unanimously to conduct the May 1 election. The City of Ellinger will eventually have to pay the County’s cost for conducting the election. Commissioners voted to defer the billing until next year

“This will give them a shot in the arm so they can generate some revenue,” said County Judge Joe Weber.
