Carmine Heritage Committee Meets
The Carmine Heritage Committee met on June 2 with discussion on Special Memories of the First 100 Years – Celebrations, Tragedies, and Unusual Happenings.
It was the custom to celebrate yearly with feasts and parties. From early times, there were the Carmine Fireman’s Feast and Harvest Feast, both held at the Cedar Creek Schutezen Verein (Carmine Hall). There were school and church picnics. Parades were held to celebrate the founding of the City of Carmine and also Pioneer Days.
Family reunions were big events. Members came from afar, each bringing delicious refreshments. These gatherings were usually held at the local or nearby dance hall. Families celebrated birthdays of family members, both young and old, on the day of the birthday. Martin Luther Lutheran Church presented their Christmas program at the RT-C High School. The Ladies Aid sponsored a bazaar of homemade goods.
Tragedies occurred without warning or preplanning. In 1898, Otto Menn died as the result of a knifing. Serving as a deputy for Fayette County, he was called to a local saloon to quell a disturbance. There he was attacked and later died. The yellow fever outbreak of 1897 affected residents in the area. Many cars hit either the Carmine State Bank or the tree in front of it when Highway 290 made a sharp turn in town.
In 1932 the Carmine State Bank was robbed. During a second attempt, W. A. Plueckhahn shot and killed the robber. There were a few fires, along with storms and wrecks. Elmo Noak suffered a heart attack while the fire department was on route to an area fire. Bill Neese was robbed by two men who jumped on the car running board. They were caught and went to prison.
Two of the local young fathers drowned in unrelated accidents. A. D. Ullrich drowned in 1959 and Floyd Etzel in 1961.
Everyone enjoyed reminiscing with the many interesting discussions.
Carmine 42 Club
The Carmine 42 Club met Wednesday, May 6 to play eight challenging games of 42 after eating a delicious lunch at JW’s Steakhouse.
The high scoring partners were LaVerne Albers and Edith Flinn with a score of 2000 and played two hands of 84. Second place partners were Carol Naegeli and Donna Mueller with a score of 1782 and played six hands of 84. Other partners were Myrt Meinkowsky and Jeanette Schoenst who played two hands of 84. Additional partners were Linda Mattocks and Marlene Waak who played one hand of 84.
All players enjoyed the exciting game challenges and look forward to the next game day in July.
RT-C School News
Round Top-Carmine ISD is on break for the summer. Classes for the 2021-2022 school year will begin on Aug. 23. District and campus offices will be closed July 5-9.
Carmine VFD
Carmine Volunteer Fire Department drill night is June 10.
They are planning their annual Feast and Fundraiser on July 18 with a drive-thru fried chicken meal. They will also have a drawing.

MLLC News
Saturday worship with Holy Communion is at 6 p.m.
Sunday School meets Sunday at 9 a.m.
Sunday worship with Holy Communion and Vacation Bible School closing is at 10 a.m. The service will also be on mllccarmine.com. The Rev. David Tinker is the pastor.
A reception in honor of Father’s Day and VBS closing follows worship.
Domino party is June 21 at 1 p.m.
Recycling Trailer
The recycling trailer is at the Carmine Hall on Thursdays from noon until 4 p.m.
Attendants are available to help unload dry newspapers, telephone books, magazines, cardboard, paper, junk mail, clean #1 and #2 food grade plastics (milk cartons should be separated from other plastic), all colors glass, steel food cans, and aluminum cans.
The trailer is in Ledbetter from 8:30-11 a.m., also on Thursdays, behind the Ledbetter Fireman’s Hall.
Visitors’ Center
Carmine Chamber of Commerce Visitors’ Center at the restored Train Depot is open on the second and fourth Fridays and Saturdays of the month from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
