Carmine First Responders Undergo Recertification
Carmine Volunteer Fire Department had nine members complete a required First Responder recertification process March 1-2.
The process includes classroom time, a written exam, and skills testing. The recertification occurs every two years with the instruction and skills being tested by Fayette County E.M.S.
Current First Responders for 2021-2023 are Chris Carmean, B. J. Finke, Dennis Gerland, Richard Hunter, Blake Moehlmann, David Mohr, Jennifer Mohr, Daryl Ray, and Robbie Tovey.
Drill night is March 11. The annual meeting with election of officers will be on March 25. New members are welcome.
RT-C School News
Round Top-Carmine High School Spring Break will be March 15-19.
The High School baseball team will play at Somerville March 16. They host Somerville March 19 and Iola on March 23.
March 26 is a holiday due to the Fayette County Jr. Livestock Show.
Carmine Heritage Committee
Superstitions, signs, and old wives’ tales was the topic of discussion at the Carmine Heritage Committee meeting on March 3. The following are a few of these old sayings.
If the fig tree buds out, then spring is near. This is even found in the Bible, Mark 13:28.
If it thunders in January, there will be frost in April.
If kids crawl through an open window, they won’t grow anymore.
If you break a mirror, you will have 7 years of bad luck.
If you eat fish and drink milk at the same meal, then you would get sick.
Your hair will grow faster if you get it cut when the moon is growing, which is after new moon.
Count the stars in a ring around the moon, and that is in how many days it will rain.
Hold your breath while driving by a cemetery, because you don’t want to breathe in the spirits.
Step on a crack; break your mother’s back.
Interesting comments were made about how these sayings may have come about. In years past, people generally did not see other people very often and they did not have much scientific or medical knowledge. They possibly observed things in nature and passed down stories of things that had happened to them.
Carmine 42 Club
The Carmine 42 Club met at JW’s Steakhouse on March 3 to play eight games of 42 after eating a wonderfully delicious lunch.
The high scoring partners were Jeanette Schoenst and LaVerne Albers with a score of 1901 and playing two hands of 84. The second-place partners were Edith Flinn and Marlene Waak with a score of 1657, playing one game of 84. Other partners were Donna Mueller and Carol Naegeli who also played a hand of 84. Partners Linda Mattocks and Betty Porter also joined the group.
Everyone enjoyed the friendly competition and look forward to the next month’s games.
MLLC News
Lenten service will be held in Waldeck at 7 p.m. on March 17 with Pastor David Tinker leading the service.
Saturday worship with Holy Communion is at 6 p.m.
Sunday School is Sunday at 9 a.m. Worship with Holy Communion, observing the Fifth Sunday in Lent, is at 10 a.m. The service will also be on the mllccarmine.com website. The Rev. David Tinker is the pastor.
Recycling Trailer
The recycling trailer is at the Carmine Hall on Thursdays from noon until 4 p.m.
The trailer is in Ledbetter from 8:30-11 a.m., also on Thursdays, behind the Ledbetter Fireman’s Hall.
Visitors’ Center
Carmine Chamber of Commerce Visitors’ Center at the restored Train Depot is open on the second and fourth Fridays and Saturdays of the month from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
