Brenham City Manager Terminated

• The Brenham City Council voted in majority to terminate City Manager James Fisher’s contract effective immediately Thursday in executive session according to City Secretary Jeanna Bellinger. Mayor Milton Tate Jr. and Council Member Albert Wright voted against the motion with all other council members voting for the motion to terminate Fisher’s contract.
• Three former outstanding Brenham players an a former football coach will be enshrined in the BHS football Hall of Honor at a luncheon Oct. 29 in the Blinn College Student Center. Trason Maresh, Erich Habermehl and Ryan Roberson will be enshrined in the hall of honor along with former Brenham coach Tim Oehrlein. Also being recognized this year is former Brenham High athletic trainer Bob Purl, who passed away in July.
• Students with special needs from Brenham and Burton ISD showed off their skills during the Champion Drive at the 153rd Washington County Fair. The show is a collaborative effort between the school districts, many volunteers and local sponsors.
• Alfred Levien who attended Blinn College was recently honored with an endowed scholarship. Levien’s son, Cordell Levien, gifted $15,000 to the Blinn College Foundation to establish the scholarship, which will be awarded annually to a student in Blinn’s Agricultural Sciences Program.

• The Texas Department of Public Safety reported last Friday that a woman was killed after a vehicle her son was driving collided with a train on CR 214 and US 59. Marina Isabel Amaya, 43, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash after Jairo Amaya, 22, drove his Ford Focus over the railroad track. The incident on CR 214 occurred at an intersection that doesn’t have railroad crossing arms to alert motorists a train is coming.
• Tropical Storm Nicholas prevented emergency officials from issuing a burn ban in Wharton County Monday after rain caused the Keetch Byram Drought Index to fall.
• The Boling Independent School District Board of Trustees will be considering and discussing having law enforcement presence next month.

• Columbus ISD school board in their Sept. 13 meeting approved a stipend of $3,000 for the high school math department. The CISD board also approve the extension of the district’s 10-day paid COVID related leave for the 2021-2022 school year.

• The Rotary Club of Flatonia had special guests speakers, Bryan Milson and Jack Pavlas of JBee’s Honey, at their meeting on Sept. 16. Milson and Pavlas have several dozen bee hives from which they collect honey one a year in the summer.
• Fayette County Elections Administrator Terri Hefner announced on Sept. 20 that the Fayette County Election Office has officially moved to 275 Ellinger Road in La Grange. The Elections office is no longer located on the first floor of the Fayette County Courthouse.
New Ulm Enterprise
• The New Ulm Volunteer Fire Department 70th Annual Celebration was a success. It brought crowds that the New Ulm Firemen’s Park has not seen in many years. Fire Department President Brent Boyce offers his that’s to all that participated.
The Weimar Mercury
• Sales at the Colorado County Fair Junior Livestock Show on Sept. 11, totaled $422,126 for 153 animals. The sales were up from the $335,575 for 130 animals at last year’s sale.
• Sales tax payments to the City of Weimar in September were $71,179, an increase of 14.46 percent from last September, figures from the state comptroller show.

• Two high school seniors from Lexington have been named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Payson Eberz, son of Philip and Monica Eberz, along with Benjamin Meyer, son of Reverend Jonathan and Ruth Meyer, received word last week of their status in the competition for over 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $30 million that will be awarded next spring.
• Two Giddings police officers were placed on paid administrative leave after what was described as an in-custody death incident. On Sept. 20 the officers were dispatched for a suspicious person. The suspect was identified as Eseciel Flores of Giddings.
• The Lexington High School Speech and Debate Team competed at the Buffalo Novice Speech Tournament over the weekend. Payson Eberz placed first in the Lincoln Douglas Debate. Lena School and Braden Rodgers placed first in CX Debate.
