Berckenhoff Fills in as County Judge for the Day

The Fayette County Commissioners Court meeting got by with a skeleton crew Thursday morning. Fayette County Judge Joe Weber was absent due to an appointment that couldn’t be rescheduled. Pct. 1 Commissioner and County Judge Pro Tem Jason McBroom was away on vacation that he scheduled several months ago.
That left Pct. 3 Commissioner Harvey Berckenhoff in charge of running the meeting. He along with the other two commissioners, Luke Sternadel (Pct. 2) and Drew Brossmann (Pct. 4), just made enough for a quorum.
“Sitting up here kind of makes me kind of nervous,” Berckenhoff said from the Judge’s seat. “I’m going to do the best I can.”
He managed just fine.
The first order of business involved a proclamation to honor the State Champions 2021 Fayetteville Baseball Team. The proclamation designated that day, June 24, as Fayetteville High School Baseball Team Day in Fayette County.
“The job that the players, the coaches and the parents have done is remarkable,” Berckenhoff said. “We wanted to recognize you for your accomplishments. Everyone is proud of you.”
“Thanks for having us, we appreciate you honoring us in this way,” said Fayetteville Baseball Coach Clint Jaeger.
The Lions went 19-9 this season and won the 1A State Championship on June 10 against Kennard by a score of 6-4.
In other business, Commissioners reviewed a set of standard operating procedures for the Fayette County Recycling Center. Recycling Center Manager Paul Zapalac said all of the rules and procedures listed in the document have already been in place. The document just lists them all in one place on paper, he said. Zapalac said he drafted the document at the request of a pipeline company that will be conducting work near the Recycling Center.
Commissioners also authorized Craig Moreau, Fayette County Emergency Management Chief, to hire an intern from Texas A&M University for about five months. The intern will work full time and earn a wage of $15 per hour. Moreau said the intern will help his office rewrite the County’s hazard mitigation plan. Moreau said he needs the help to compile a robust plan, which he said is important in securing grants for the County.
