ARTS Offers New Camps in Schulenburg
Parents, do you need to get your kids out of the house for a little while? During these hot summer days, Arts of Rural Texas invites children from all the surrounding communities to join them at their new Schulenburg campus for Summer Art Camp.
Here great new discoveries and opportunities will be experienced.
Session 1 runs July 12th through the 16th and includes music and art from Asia. Music instructor Betsy Hankins will lead students to retell the Chinese folk tale, “Tikki Tikki Tembo” with gong, glockenspiel, xylophone, recorders, hand percussion, shadow puppets and narration. After more than three decades, children still love hearing about the boy with the long name who fell down the well. Delight in the re-creation of an ancient Chinese folktale that has hooked legions of children, teachers, and parents, who return, generation after generation, to learn about the danger of having such an honorable name as Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo. In conjunction with the wonderful puppetry and musical program, instructor Harley Good will continue the journey to Asia with the ancient art of Japanese paper folding, origami. Session 2 is July 19 to 23. Students will be finding their Zen with instructor Georgia Pohl, creating beautiful Zentangles. Woodworking instructor, Kevin White, will fill out the week assisting each student’s self-expression in art and creative craft activities.
Schulenburg’s third and final session, July 26th-30th will be led by Texas Commission on the Arts touring performer, Chris Espinoza. The children will hear “Boo! Hiss! Yay!” as they overact in an old-fashioned melodrama. Before they take the stage, they will develop basic acting and improv skills by exploring the Actor’s Toolbox: Body, Voice, Imagination, Concentration, and Cooperation. Kevin White, our woodworking instructor, will assist the kids in making their own props and scenery.
All camps are held Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 3 PM. Schulenburg students drop off and pick up will be at the front of the On Pointe dance studio, 1201 Kessler Ave. Snacks will be provided daily. (Campers with special diets should plan to bring their own snacks.) Everyone should bring a sack lunch each day and a refillable water bottle. Fridays are presentation days when friends and families are invited to view and enjoy all the creative fun from a great art camp. At this time a small art exhibit or a wonderful performance will be held. These are such a joy and the pride and joy the children show in their work is a delight to experience.
