Arrest Made In Columbus Murder

Columbus Police Department on Sept. 24 reported that three arrests were made in the Keaton Hancock murder case. Warrants for Cairo Ruvalcaba Jr., Ethan Dulany, and Jose “Joey” Casanova, all of Eagle Lake, were issued for the charge of murder.

Carolyn Miller was chosen to serve as the interim city manager for the city of Brenham Thursday after executive session. Handshakes and hugs were shared all around after the motion was made by city council member Adonna Saunders and unanimously approved.
Washington County Commissioners Court approved the purchase of an Ambulance 450 Chassis for remount for the Washington County EMS department Friday during a special session. The purchase was approved through the 2022 budget.

A one vehicle accident occurred last Friday, claiming the life of one person, according to he Wharton County Sherrff’s Office, which continues to investigate the incident. Benjamin John Merecka, 25, of Boling, died after being ejected from a Jeep occupied by two other people.
For the first time this year, a burn ban was ordered in Wharton County due to dry conditions. If not for some precipitation from Tropical Storm Nicholas last week, the burn ban would have been ordered earlier.
Allegations of a student threatening to bring a gun to Wharton High School Friday were unfounded after the matter was investigated further according to the Wharton Independent School District.
The Wharton County Commissioners Court will consider assigning deputies to the Boling and Louise independent school districts this fall.

National Night Out, an annual effort to get neighbors and first responders to meet one another, is set for Oct. 5 from 6-8:30pm. This year’s theme will be “Party in the USA” and local law enforcement will participate in the festivities.

Three more suspects were arrested in the shooting death of Keaton Delvin Hancock of Columbus which occurred on Sept. 10.
A suspect in the death of Damian Stevens surrendered to the Eagle Lake police officers.

The Flatonia Police Department has had some recent resignations. Agencies across the country are in such desperate need of officers that officers are in a unique position to be able to move agencies that previously had so many applicants that it would not have been possible before.
Flatonia ISD Band Director Robert Hansen died on Sept. 22, six days after having a major cardiac event on Sept. 16. Hansen, 43, was a beloved fixture of the music program at Flatonia ISD, leading the Flatonia ISD Bulldog Band to win multiple sweepstakes awards through UIL competitions from 2015 through 2021, and several first division ratings.
