Amidst Recent Bicycle Thefts, Some Reminders From LGPD

Someone swiped a bicycle on North Madison Street in La Grange last Friday and then swapped it for a different bike on Lester Street.

According to La Grange Police Chief David Gilbreath, Officer Mitchell Maxwell responded to two theft reports on the morning of Oct. 8. The first came from a residence in the 400 block of S. Lester St. Maxwell responded and a resident reported their bicycle missing. A different bicycle that didn’t belong to them was parked on the property, however.

Then Maxwell responded to a report of another missing bicycle in the 700 block of N. Madison. After the resident described the bicycle, Maxwell determined it was the one found earlier in the 400 block of S. Lester.

Gilbreath said he believes someone stole the bicycle from N. Madison and drove it across town to S. Lester, where they swapped it for the other different bike. The bicycle from N. Madison was returned to its owners. The bicycle from S. Lester remains missing.

Gilbreath encouraged residents to take pictures of their bicycles and record the serial numbers. If your bike doesn’t have a serial number, Gilbreath advised engraving the last four digits of your driver’s license to the bike’s frame. Make sure you take a picture of the engraving and the bicycle.

Gilbreath said it is very difficult for police to solve bicycle thefts without such documentation.
