77 Years Later, a Local WWII Soldier Who Died in Battle Still Remembered in France

Seventy-seven years ago, Fayetteville Sgt. Rudolph (Rudy) Kubena was a killed during battle in France in 1944 during WWII.

This week, a message arrived here from France to remind us that his sacrifice is not forgotten.

Rox Ann Johnson, of the Fayette Heritage Museum and Archives maintains the fayette countyhistory.org website and this week she got this message from Christian Levaufre, the Chairman of the Normandy 44- 90th Infantry Division association:

Hello,

I am the chairman of an association dedicated to the history of the 90th Infantry Division.

In the village of le Plessis Lastelle (Beaucoudray on the US maps) at Normandy, a month ago we dedicated a new plaque to the men of the 3rd battalion of the 357th Infantry Regiment.

Someone in the audience came to me with a US legging asking me if I could help him to put a name on its owner.

By luck there was a serial number in it that gave the name of Sgt. Rudolf Kubena who belonged to company L and was killed in action there on July 7, 1944.

Yesterday, on the anniversary day of his death, one of our members paid a little tribute to him at the foot of our new marker.

Kubena entered the Army in 1942; served in Europe; awarded GCM, Rifle Medal & Purple Heart. He is buried in the Fayetteville Catholic Cemetery.
