Bill Doolin and his outlaw gang with the catchy name “Oklahombres” robbed a bank in Longview, Texas on May 23, 1894 and got away with $4,000 in cold cash. For ten years, the son of an Arkansas cotton farmer was a workaday cowboy with nothing more than his skill with a sixgun to distinguish him from the other ranch hands in the Oklahoma Territory.

I was touched by Babette Hale’s column a couple of weeks ago. I could relate to her feeling of loneliness after losing her “Hale” after many years of marriage. In a way, she wrote my story as she related how lonely she had been and how much she missed conversation with her man.

Early voting in the May 24 primary runoff elections ends Friday, May 20. Under state law, voters who cast ballots in either party’s primary election must vote only in the same party’s runoff election. Voters who did not cast ballots in the primary may vote in either party’s runoff election.

The La Grange Class of 2022 graduates next week Thursday. As their last day of school approaches, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about their first day of school – some 13 years ago.

To The Editor: I live in La Grange, and notice that a business is posting signs all over the city which makes it look bad. I am dealing with the city, but ask that you please take up your signs, and do not destroy our community with your trashy signs.

To The Editor: This is the time of year the members of the local volunteer fire departments get busy working on their fundraising events. They are the busy men and women who work for a living, raise families, maintain their property and then find the extra time to take care of the rest of us.

To The Editor: Michael Kuhn’s reply to my letter to the editor is the typical baseless response made by the right wing that is destroying constructive political dialogue in our country, and that is to wrongfully accuse one of making arguments not even made in one’s letter and then to blame Biden and the Democrats in the short term. It is not “tunnel vision” for one to examine the long term history of Republican inability to govern, described in my letter, to understand that it was primarily Republican lawmakers, who for decades now have protected the offshoring of American jobs and manufacturing to places like China, and who have protected the huge annual cost to U.S.
