Drop Fridays

Enthusiasm is half the battle in any endeavour.

Quality over quantity might be the other half of the equation.

You should have seen the excitement from a couple of our sons when we told them that La Grange ISD was considering going to a four-day school week. There appears to be similar excitement from LGISD staff, as a whopping 93-percent of them in a survey recently urged the school to look more into the idea.

If students and teachers (the two most important ingredients of a school) are both enthusiastic about something I think you’ve got a recipe for a great idea.

Being a kid these days is hard.

Being a teacher these days is even harder.

Giving each of those groups an extra day to recharge and get re-focused in a four-day week is a great idea.

LGISD has lost some great teachers over the past few years for a variety of reasons. I think a four-day week would slow down that exodus. And there is no greater key to learning than having a great teacher.

Suddenly Fridays can become a day for kids to spend more days with their grandparents, get outside more, actually spend some time on projects. Some high school students can pick up an extra shift at their part time jobs.

For parents who can’t watch their kids on Fridays, the school is still going to provide childcare. For kids in extra curricular activities, Friday can become a day to really focus on those pursuits.
