Lives Affected By Funding Cuts

To the Editor: For years, children across our nation in many churches, especially Sunday Schools, have learned to sing, “Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world, red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in His sight.” Even though some of us only had tales associated with World War II, or different events later, to inform our sense of the world, with no TV in those days, we believed, really wanted to believe, these lyrics were true. We heard tales and saw newsreel accounts of American soldiers caring for children and sharing food with them, especially chocolate bars.

Whacha’ Doing?

Even police officers have slow nights, and look for ways to stir up a little excitement during those lonely shifts. One such incident, a longtime favorite at the station, was told and retold, always with a grin, by the two officers who lived it.

The Day We Attacked The White House!

In 1953 I was in the 3rd grade going to Radhost School. During recess time we usually played a ball game plus we had numerous other games. This one day it had rained the day before and the ball field was too wet to play on. The land this playground was on was sticky black land.

Budget for Animals

To the Editor: As the volunteer veterinarian at the shelter, I applaud Teresa Brown’s recent article explaining the difficulties faced by the dedicated staff there. Day to day care for the increasing number of animals left homeless is a huge task in itself.

Don’t Leave Downtown

To the Editor: I just read the news article in your Fayette County Record “Schulenburg Abandoning City Hall Renovation” regarding the decision, by the Schulenburg City Council, to abandon the restoration of a beautiful downtown Schulenburg historic building. I also find it down right ridiculous that: 1) They have no cost for possible restoration and no cost for “another site” but have identified possible sites.

SISD Should Make Decisions in Best Interest of Students

To the Editor: I have been fortunate to know Richard Hoogendoorn both personally and professionally for a little over 10 years now. Not a long time by any means, but long enough to know that he is a man of impeccable integrity, unquestionable ethics, and unwavering faith.

Ad And Blinky Best Trick Shot Artists

The St. Louis World’s Fair may have been the first time Ad and Plinky Toepperwein performed in public as husband and wife, but the couple from the Lone Star State wowed the matinee audience on May 13, 1904 with their trick-shot artistry.

Living and Giving Generously

A large glass jar marked ‘Children’s Offering’ sits in each of the four churches of Shared Lutheran Ministry. During worship, children are invited to bring their offering to add it to the jar. It’s a noisy endeavor. I delight in hearing the little feet rush down the aisle, then listening to the satisfying ‘clink’as coins ricochet to the bottom of the glass jar. That is, if the coin can be freed from the sticky hands of the toddler that bears it.

House Bill Proposes New Standardized Test

A Texas House bill would eliminate the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness test and replace it with a test comparing students’ performance to one another rather than state-set standards, the Austin American-Statesman reported.
