Free Stew Rehearsal for the Big Cook-off
August 8-12, 1975
The Round Top Rifle Association, City of Round Top, City of Carmine and Round Top DYD Club were sponsoring a free 300-gallon stew supper on Friday night as a practice session for the 1975 International Stew Cooking Festival. Local members of the 1974 International Stew Cooking Festival were: Dr. Phillip Knutzen, Lee Etzel, Innis Wagner Jr., George Pfeifer, Nelson Krause and Dennis Sacks. Eaters were asked to bring their own bowl and spoon, and come prepared to enjoy an evening of skat, dominoes and other games, followed by a dance to the music of Donnie Wavre and the Hi-Liters of Columbus. Dance tickets were $1 per person. Cold beverages would also be available. Friends of Sheriff Jim Flournoy donated the stew meat.
The Tietjen farm, owned by Anton Tietjen Jr. of La Grange, qualified for the 1975 Texas Family Land Heritage Program. The tract had been in the family since 1875, when J.F. August Schulze settled there.
Cindy Petras of La Grange was selected as theAustinAqua Festival’s 1975 Aqua Beauty. The daughter of Mrs. Ike Petras of La Grange and the late County Judge Ike Petras, Cindy was sponsored by TS-BS, Etc., an Austin firm dealing in imprinted items such as T-shirts and bumper stickers.
Thirteen cars on a southbound Southern Pacific freight train derailed north of Winchester. The ill-fated cars contained new automobiles, TV sets, clothes, malt liquor and other goods. No injuries were reported in the mishap.
Fayette County’s total tax revenue from mixed drink remittances for April-June of 1975 was $3,852.26, according to State Comptroller Bob Bullock. Fayette County’s 15% share of the total was $577.84. More than $2.5 million was being sent to 186 counties and 298 cities across Texas as their share of the three-month mixed drink tax proceeds.
Fayette County Sheriff T.J. Flournoy reported, “Our work continues to increase every month. We have never had as much civil work as we have now. Hardly a day passes that we don’t have five or six civil papers to serve. Maybe it is because money is tight and living expenses are so high that everyone is suing everyone else.”
Funeral services were held for: Herbert Veith, 86, of Fay-etteville; Erwin (E.O.) Iaelt, 73, a La Grange native; and Charles J. Adamcik, 88, a native of Hostyn.
Two young women from La Grange representing Fayette Memorial Hospital, Myra Nowicki and Verlene Supak, were candidates for graduation from the Blinn College Vocational Nursing Program.
State KJT president Amos Pavlik of La Grange was elected to a four-year term as director of the National Alliance of Czech Catholics, headquartered in Chicago. The group’s goal was to coordinate all Czech Catholic organizations and individuals so they could be more effective in matters of religion as well as civic, charitable and educational activities throughout the U.S.
Mr. and Mrs. Dennies Wasut celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary at the Ellinger Chamber of Commerce Hall. Dorothy Mae Hentschel and Dennies Joe Wasut were married July 29, 1950, in St. John’s Rectory in Fayetteville with the Rev. Frank K. Matustik officiating.
Mr. and Mrs. Larry Faldyn hosted a baptismal dinner honoring their daughter, Jennifer Lee, on Sunday, August 3 at Roitsch Camp. The infant was baptized in Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church. Her sponsors were Miss Elaine Fritsche, Richard Peters and Robert Hamff. Godparents were Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Roitsch.
Ernstes Dairy Farm of the Freyburg community exhibited the grand champion bale of hay at the 8th annual Schulenburg Young Farmers Hay Show held at the Schulenburg Bicentennial Festival. The first-place winner in the sorghum class was a bale of Hybrid Sudan exhibited by Leroy McBride. In the native grass category, a bale of Blue Stem hay won first for I.J. Pavlicek. A bale of Alicia grass exhibited by Benedict Kallus topped the Bermuda grass class.
The La Grange Post Office had a special slot just above and to the right of the regular letter drops inside the building where local mail and letters could be deposited to receive a ‘La Grange, Texas 78945’ postmark. All other mail was cancelled with a ‘U.S. Postal Service’ stamp.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced 1975 price support levels for average- quality peanut crops based on a $358.50 per ton minimum national average support level. This included by type: Virginia, $387.96 per ton; Runner, $393.10; Southeast Spanish, $379.06; Southwest Spanish, $374.87; Southwest Valencia, suitable for roasting, $387.98.
