Cotton was king in the 1950s on the high plains of West Texas when I was growing up, and it played a major role in life since the economy of the community depended on cotton production. It was big news every fall when the first bale of cotton rolled out of a local gin with the stats on weight and bales per acre.

The United States Supreme Court ruled on Mar. 15, 1896 that Greer County belonged not to Texas but the recently organized Oklahoma Territory. The questionable decision raised doubts about the justices’ impartiality and stole from the Lone Star State a million acres held since the Revolution.

I moved houses all of my life from the day I was a teenager. After my Dad passed in 1975, my brothers, George, John and Dennis and I kept the business going (I retired in 2000). During all of these years I came upon many incidents and experienced many episodes.

A number of statewide races are headed for a May 24 runoff after the votes were tallied in the March 1 primary. Topping the ballot in the Republican races is the contest for attorney general, where incumbent Ken Paxton led the field with 42.7% of votes cast, followed by George P.

It’s almost time to start putting seeds in the ground for the spring vegetable garden. But not quite yet, I think.

To the Editor: To trans, queer, and gender non-conforming kids and other folks in La Grange and elsewhere - It gets better, and I’m not just saying that. There are places that are much safer and less hateful and there are people in Texas and locally fighting for you.

To the Editor: To Superintendent Bill Wagner and La Grange ISD Board of Trustees: As a descendent of William Hermes and on behalf of our family, I wish to thank you for the placement of the plaque at the entrance of La Grange Elementary School recognizing the land gift that my great-grandfather made to the La Grange ISD in 1948 in memory of his father William Hermes Sr. I also wish to express our appreciation for the renaming of the two gymnasiums Hermes 1 and Hermes 2 We, too, are thankful for William Hermes’ generosity to the community and his contribution to the education of the children of La Grange, and, again, are very appreciative of the recognition that you have given him.

To the Editor: In the past some of you know I have written and spoken about the proper etiquette concerning the use of our flag. So it came as an unbelievable, sad, and revolting shock to me when I saw a truck with the American flag on one side and what appears to be an American flag on the other side of the vehicle.

To the Editor: See, this is what is fascinating (and disappointing) about the frequent Mikus letters… he really does loath half of Americans who are Conservative in their views and reject Socialism (the New Democrats). In his latest, he bloviates on the horrible invasion befalling the Ukrainian people.

To The Editor: In my opinion the letter “Ukrainian Fight” is divisive, insulting, dismissive of historical facts and shows an ignorance of the real enemy of freedom. The author is blinded by Progressive ideology and fails to realize the elected Progressives in Washington D.C.
