The Move to Gulfport

“Hey boy, grab my bag,” Dad called to a large cockroach scurrying across the hotel lobby, his way of adding humor to the reality we were about to stay in a no-star establishment. Dad was sober.

Trump’s Crimes Too Serious to Ignore

To the Editor: It’s official: Donald Trump has been indicted on federal charges, including violating the Espionage Act, criminal conspiracy, and obstruction of justice. Trump publicly and repeatedly confirmed that he took classified documents.

Duty to Resist Tyranny

To the Editor: There is a time when resistance to tyranny becomes the duty of every Christian. And by “Christian” I mean anyone who agrees with Christ that He is Lord of heaven and earth (Matt 28:18).

Happy Father’s Day to All

One way we honor our ancestors is to organize family reunions, and on my father’s side, family reunions either annually or biannually have become enduring traditions. My paternal grandfather’s clan, the Citzlers, recently celebrated our 97th annual reunion, dating back to 1925. (We missed meeting in only two of the intervening years.) In my paternal grandmother’s branch of the family, the first Bauer Family reunion of record happened in the 1930s. Both reunions continue to occur, with folks coming from miles and miles to join in the day’s activities.

Training Cattle

It is nice to have welltrained animals and even better to have well-trained children. Parents love to hear that their children have good manners when eating at the table or sitting quietly among adults. Everyone loves to watch a welltrained dog perform, but hates to see a dog jump on visitors arriving at the front door.

Remember When?

The La Grange Leopards pushed across two runs with two out in the final inning against the Brenham Cubs at Nelson Field in Austin to win the Class AAA state baseball championship, 3 to 1. The victory climaxed a 21-4 season for the base-running, slick-fielding charges of Coach Leonard May and his assistant Bill Ruskin. The big win brought La Grange High School its first state championship trophy ever in team athletics. David Zatopek’s single won the game. The ball barely eluded the desperate diving glove of Rodney Graves, who seemed to run for half a minute getting under it. For a breathless moment, he seemed to have made the impossible catch. Then the ball trickled away as the Cub centerfielder laid on the ground in agony. Right fielder Bobby Pieper alertly pegged third to catch sliding Buddy Grobe for the third out. But the gate closed too late for the Brenham Cubs because Jim Quinn and Kenny Hatfield, who were away at the crack of the bat, had already raced home with runs.

The Choices of Growing Older

The trials of getting old, in polite company it is referred to as ‘aging,’ are ignored by most of us, until we suddenly find ourselves there—in the throes of aching, stumbling, forgetting, breaking, with lots of time to talk about these ailments. If you are over 70, or perhaps its 75, you know if you join a group of like-aged folks, you will soon be discussing what doctor you saw yesterday, what specialist you need an appointment with, and asking what did you say? The conversations can go on for hours, with breaks when someone says, “Can we talk about something else?” That suggestion lasts for about as long as it takes to sip on cucumber water, and the conversation begins about how cucumbers are a health remedy, according to the nutritionist you had an appointment with last week.

Listen, Build Perspective

To the Editor: Each time I read opinions, I’m struck by the absolutes - the “shoulds” and “should nots” with no wiggle room. But maybe if I stop advocating my position long enough to listen, and look for reputable resources other than the one or two that I routinely use, ones that present a different perspective than my own, I might build a bit of understanding and tolerance.
