LG Tennis Team Readies For Playoffs

The La Grange Team Tennis squad lost the final match of the regular season 7-12 to Giddings. The result drops the Leps to a final season record of 4-3 and the #4 seed in the upcoming playoffs, which will begin the week of October 7 (date/location to be determined). Players winning both of their matches were Hannah Garrison (Jr) and Lillian Carey (Fr).

Gando is 3-1 Of Note: The Flatonia losing streak has now reached three games and its going to take a heroic effort from the Bulldogs this week to keep it from reaching four as they head to Ganado to face an Indians team that is ranked No. 3 in the state in 2A Division I. Ganado’s only loss this season came to 3A No. 6-ranked East Bernard. Otherwise the Indians have beaten Van Vleck, Boling and Tidehaven. Senior quarterback Bryce Ullman threw for 402 yards last week in the win over Tidehaven with Austen Pena catching 11 passes. Ullman was a 3,000-yard passer last season. Ganado went to the state semifinals last season and graduated just three seniors from that team.

Local Volleyball Teams Start District Play With Authority

The La Grange varsity volleyball team defeated Smithville in a thrilling five set match Tuesday on the road 14-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-18, 21-19. The victory improves the Lady Leps overall record to 9-21 overall but more importantly they are now 1-0 in district.

Flatonia Falls to Three Rivers

The Flatonia Bulldogs football team lost on the road Friday at Three Rivers 55-24. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 1-3 this season while Three Rivers improves to 4-0.

Leopards Pluck the Taylor Ducks 35-7

It’s been five years since the Leps have started a football season this well. Behind their second stellar defensive performance in as many weeks, and touchdowns from five different players, La Grange beat Taylor 35-7 Friday to improve to 3-1 this season.

#8 Klayton Michalka had a 50 yard run on the opening drive #16 Quade Brothers with a 1 yard touchdown run. Extra Point field goal made by #56 Jahir Ocon #16 Quade Brothers with a 3 yard touchdown pass to #3 Traiton Broussard.

Chovanec Wins $400

After four weeks we finally have our first winner in the football pick-it contest sponsored by Farmers Lumber Company. Out of a season-high 123 entries last week, only a single ballot correctly predicted winners of all 10 games. The $400 prize goes to Michael Chovanec. We will try to get a photo of him accepting his check in Friday’s edition of the newspaper. Special recognition to Randy Gardiner and Walter Newcomb, who both started 9-0 only to be let down by the Cowboys in the final game.
