The Schulenburg Shorthorns defeated the Brazos Cougars 35-6 on homecoming night in Schulenburg last Friday. It was the second week in a row for the Horns to win against a team picked to beat them.

Brazos (3-1) received the opening kickoff and struck the end zone early. Cougar quarterback Jarvse Dickerson scored on the third play of the game of an explosive 63yard run. The extra point was no good, and Brazos went up 0-6 just over a minute into the game.

“Our whole game plan was to contain him,” Hobbs said. “We had one mistake. We fixed it. He’s a really good player.”

The Schulenburg defense wouldn’t allow another point for the rest of the game.

The Horns responded quickly. Da’Terrion Houston received the kickoff brought the ball out near midfield. The Horns reached the end zone in four plays. Jayse Janda scored on pass from Shorthorn quarterback Aaron Janecek from the 33 yard line. The extra point by Brysen Schramek was good, and the Horns led 7-6 with 9:50 left in the first quarter.

Shorthorn defensive back Reid Janda ended the Cougars’ next drive with an interception. That set up a scoring drive for the Horns from midfield. Seven plays later Janecek walked into the end zone on a keeper. The extra point was good and the Horns led 14-6 with about three minutes left in the first quarter.

The Cougars managed a few first downs, but the Schulenburg defense kept them out of the end zone the rest of the night.

“We were flying to the ball,” Hobbs said. “We were physical. We tackled well. We covered well. That was as good of a team win as we’ve had here in a really long time.”

Later in the second quarter, a couple of big passes from Janecek to Byron Johnson and Jayse Janda put the Horns in scoring position. Houston scored on a run from the three yard line. The extra point was good and the Horns led 21-6 with about five minutes left in the half. Again, the Cougars were unable to respond.

Reid Janda got his second interception of the night in the third quarter. That set up another scoring drive for the Horns. John Davis rushed in for the touchdown from the six yard line. The extra point was good and the Horns led 28-6 with 4:44 left in the third quarter.

Jayse Janda scored his second touchdown of the night on a third and goal pass from Janecek on the seven yard line. The extra point was good and the Horns went up 35-6 with 7:32 left in the game.

The Shorthorn defense forced Brazos to turn the ball over on downs. Schulenburg took possession with 3:45 left in the game. Hobbs put his second team offense on the field to run out the clock.

Defensive standouts for the Horns included Reid Janda, who picked up two interceptions for the second game in a row, and Jayvan Luhrs, who also had an interception and stripped ball that should have been a touchdown but was called back on forward progress.

“I think we’ve gotten better all the way around,” Hobbs said after the game. “I’m was very happy with our offensive line. We really leaned on them and I felt like we did a good job in our running game. That allows us to make a couple of big plays. We can play defense and we can run the ball - that’s a recipe for success anywhere you go.”

Schulenburg is now 3-1 on the season. They will play their first district game at home against Kenedy this Friday.
