DAR Chapter Supports Troops on the Border

Members attending the May 21, meeting of the the Smith-McMillan Chapter, NSDAR provided generously towards the Chapter’s Veterans Project: Support Texas Troops on the Border. Items were received by Janet Murphy, Service to Veterans Chair and JoAnn Vasina, chair of Project Patriot who then itemized and sent them off to Camp Walker in Laredo.

Animal Shelter Update

As of May 27, the Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter has 105 animals in care: 63 dogs/42 cats. This number includes animals in the facility, in foster care for medical, space, or awaiting transport to rescue partner.

Art in the Park Event Held in Schulenburg

On Monday, May 16 Parents As Teachers (PAT) families from Fayette and Colorado counties met at Wolters Park in Schulenburg for Art in Park-Family Art Night. With the help of Mrs. Kelli Thumann and PAT Educator Karen Hoskins, Parent Educators and volunteers set up different stations throughout the park to spotlight American children’s book author and illustrator, Eric Carle. Carle uses bright, eye-catching colors and simple designs that appeal to young children. He is well known for books like “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” “The Very Busy Spider,” and “The Tiny Seed.”

Tester Awarded Scholarship

VVA Chapter 870 recently awarded a scholarship to Travis Tester, grandson of C.W. Leonard of Schulenburg. Pictured is C.W. Leonard presenting the scholarship certificate to Travis, who recently graduated from Huntsville High School in Huntsville. Travis plans to major in business at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville.
