La Grange native Anthony Oppermann has been named General Manager of the Richmond, Va., Flying Squirrels, the team announced on Monday afternoon. Ben Rothrock, who has been the Flying Squirrels’ General Manager since 2017 and Chief Operating Officer since 2023, will continue to serve as the team’s COO.

The District 28-2A track meet was held last week. Shiner won the boys team title and Weimar won the girls team title.

In back-to-back games Monday and Tuesday the La Grange baseball team split with Giddings. The Leps lost Monday 8-0.

Schulenburg ISD released the names of the finalists for the position of head football coach and athletic director in response to a public information request from the Fayette County Record. The school board ultimately hired Clay Ferguson for the job on March 7.

The Round Top-Carmine baseball team lost to Iola 16-0 Tuesday. Carter Marburger and Miles Neese got the only hits for the Cubs, who fell to 3-9 with the loss. William Neese, Caden Tovey and Facundo Cerda combined on the pitching effort for RTC.

La Grange graduate Trey East III continues to excel on the track team at the University of Houston, and ran last weekend at the Texas Relays in Austin for the Cougars. He was 4th leg and ended the 4x400m relay with a split of 45.79 in the prelims, then a split 45.65 the next day in finals. Earlier this season East won the 200 meter title at the Leonard Hamilton Invitational with a time of 21.19 and was also on the first place 4x400 team at that meet. He was on the second place 4x400 team at the Texas A&M Ted Nelson Invitational and was on the winning 4x400 team at the Kirk Baptiste Invitational. East is a senior.

Cambree Denham had a big day Monday at the District 29-1A track meet in Fayetteville. She won gold in the pole vault, the high jump, the 200 meters and as part of the district champion 4x100 relay.

In a battle of two teams that made it to the state tournament last year, the Fayetteville baseball team scored an impressive win Tuesday at Flatonia, beating the Bulldogs 6-2. The victory improves the Lions to 6-2 this season.

The Schulenburg baseball team beat Weimar Tuesday 16-4 to improve to 6-9 overall and 3-3 in district. The Shorthorns cranked out 15 hits with Ian Reeves and Aaron Janecek each getting three hits.
