2000 Champs Reunite for Homecoming

Because of the pandemic, the 2000 La Grange High School state championship football was not able to hold their 20th reunion the last two years, but they made up for lost time as most of the members of that team, players and coach alike, reunited at Friday’s homecoming game and then at a party thereafter. All the members of the title team were announced to the crowd at halftime. Above, left, current head coach Matt Kates walks up to shake hands with 2000 title coach Tony Valastro, center and former LGISD superintendent Erwin Sladek, as the title trophies sit in the foreground.

Shorthorns Nearly Upset State-Ranked Burton

The Schulenburg football team almost pulled off a huge upset over No. 3-ranked Burton Friday on Homecoming night for the Shorthorns. But the Panthers (3-0) escaped by scoring two late touchdowns as part of a 30-point fourth quarter surge. Schulenburg (0-3) used a 66-yard pass from Tyler Ryba to Kenny Schramek (the duo’s third passing score of the game) to tie the game at 41-41 with just 3:04 left in the contest. But Burton’s Tyrone Gilmon ran for a go-ahead touchdown with 1;01 left and then intercepted a pass and returned it 48 yards for an insurance score with just 36 seconds left in the game. Schulenburg’s Ryba ran for two touchdowns to go with those three touchdown passes but it was not enough.

La Grange 7th Grade 24, Smithville 0 The seventh grade started their season off with a season opening win in Smithville. The Leopards used a strong first half by scoring all 24 points to ride their way to victory. Scoring the first touchdown for the Leopards was David Watson with Rowe Price adding the two point conversion. The next touchdown was a result of a punt return by Traiton Broussard with Price adding his second two point conversion. Broussard then scored the final touchdown and added the two point conversion himself to close the scoring. Also having a good offensive performance was Howard Holmes who had several rushing attempts with some long carries to help set up the touchdowns. The Leopards had good team defense as there were many who contributed. Ryland Jernigan helped preserve the shutout defensively by intercepting a Smithville pass at the goal line in the final seconds. The seventh grade plays their home opener on September 13 against Navasota with the first game beginning at 6:00.
