Weimar Edges Lady Leps
It took half a game for the La Grange girls basketball team to shake some holiday-break sluggishness.
That was all the opening Weimar needed.
The Lady Cats (9-1), who earlier this month had climbed as high as No. 2 in the state rankings in Class 2A, jumped out to a big early lead and then just held on for a 42-38 win Tuesday afternoon in La Grange.
“We dug ourselves a hole and we were never able to get out of it. It took us the whole first half to get into the game defensively,” said La Grange senior Megan Brothers, who scored nine of her game-high 16 points in a fourth quarter rally that nearly resulted in a Lady Leps comeback.
Skylar Heger led Weimar in scoring with 12 points and Malarie Mican added 11.
La Grange fell to 4-3 overall with the loss, but have a 3-0 mark in district play.
“It took us a while to adjust to them,” said La Grange head coach Heath Golan. “At halftime we said we had to be more physical inside, their post players were having their way with us early on.”
Weimar led 9-2 after the first quarter and 25-13 at halftime, but a Lyric Sampson three-pointer at the end of the third quarter cut the Weimar lead to 26-30.
Brother nailed a three-pointer with 21 seconds in the game to make the Weimar lead 38-42 but La Grange couldn’t complete the comeback.
La Grange sophomore Keslyn Davis scored eight and Sampson scored seven.
Despite the loss, the Lady Leps treasured just being able to play. Several of their district foes have cancelled their games (Manor New Tech, Austin Achieve) so Tuesday’s game was La Grange’s only certain game in a nearly month-long stretch between Dec. 18 and Jan. 12.
Other recent games have been lopsided wins (Smithville, Austin Eastside).
“The theme this season is take advantage of every opportunity you have,” Golan said. “I’m trying to fill some of those open dates so we can play ... we need competitive games.”
“I would take competitive games like this over blowout wins every time,” Brothers said.
