The Schulenburg football team came out swinging Friday against Lexington, matching the Eagles score for score early before falling 69-34.

The Shorthorns remain winless at 0-8 overall and 0-3 in district, but early Friday they looked like they might be able to engineer an upset as Shorthorns Owen Brenek and Mike Wilson each ran for a pair of long touchdown runs to leave Lexington clinging to a 28-26 lead midway through the second quarter.

But Lexington outscored Schulenburg 41-8 the rest of the game to pull away.

Schulenburg ended up with 261 yards rushing led by Wilson’s 133 yards and an even 100 from Brenek.

But Lexington rushed for 423 yards and added 158 yards through the air on 7-of-8 passing from quarterback Chris Smith.

Lexington improved to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in district with the win.

Despite this tough start to the season, Schulenburg could still grab a playoff berth with wins in their final two games. This Friday they host Rogers (which is coming off a 21-0 loss to Thrall). The Shorthorns close the season Nov. 6 on the road against 1-7 Florence.
