Ward Rising to the Occasion for State-Ranked RT-C Volleyball Team

Round Top-Carmine senior volleyball player Kaysie Ward has put her upperclassman leadership on display to help the Cubettes back up their TGCApreseason ranking of fifth in Class 1A.

Ward notched 10 kills in a game vs. 4A Sealy High School and contributed with kills throughout the tournament, which eventually helped her team win the silver medal at the Columbus Varsity Classic, a tournament made up of bigger schools.

“Her level of play from her junior year to her senior year has been night and day difference,” said Round Top-Carmine head volleyball coach Catie Weishuhn. “This year, she’s gotten quite a few sets to the outside. Last year, those balls probably would’ve gone in the net. She’s done a really good job of finding a way for the ball to hit the court. We’re super proud of her. She’s also getting her hands on a lot of balls in the middle and that’s crucial for our team.” Ward’s drastic improvement has landed her a spot for this editions Athlete of the Week.

Question: As it’s only the start of the season, how would you evaluate the team so far?

Answer: “I would evaluate us as really scrappy and we’re working really hard to have a good outcome.”

Question: What’s your best memory of this past summer?

Answer: “Probably going to San Antonio with one of See my friends.”

Question: Who’s a teammate you’d go on a crazy mission with?

Answer: “Jessica (Rohde). She’s our other middle. She’s one of my best friends.”

Question: What’s your favorite thing about Coach Weishuhn?

Answer: “She’s easy to joke with and she’s very understanding.”

Question: Where would you rather go, Los Angeles or Miami?

Answer: “Miami” Question: What’s your strongest trait as a volleyball player?

Answer: “I think I’m very encouraging and I have good grit.”

Question: Who’s a team you’re looking forward to playing the most this year and why?

Answer: “I think I’m looking forward to probably meeting up with Fayetteville again, then meet up with Neches or D’Hanis in the playoffs.”

Question: Who’s a volleyball player you look up to?

Answer: “I probably would look up to my older sister. She used to play here.”

Question: What’s your most used app on your phone?

Answer: “Tik Tok or Snapchat.”

Question: How has Round Top-Carmine formed you into the athlete you are today?

Answer: “There’s no excuses here. You have to work really hard for your spot.”

Ward’s experience and ability to get better bodes well for Cubettes volleyball, a team that’s quickly become one of the best in Class 1A.
