‘Texas Football’ Has Mixed Predictions for Local Teams

The cover of this year’s magazine features Texas A&M defensive players.

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine is arriving on news racks around the state, the first sign that football season is just around the corner.

The cover this year features Texas A&M, saying “A&M’s Defense Leads the Aggies’ National Title Charge.”

Of interest to local readers is the high school section which features district-by-district predictions and breakdowns.

La Grange and Flatonia aren’t getting much respect from the magazine, but Schulenburg is.

Here’s a look at those high school predictions:

Here’s how the magazine predicts District 13-4A finishing:

1. Cuero

2. Navasota

3. Giddings

4. Smithville

5. La Grange

6. Gonzales

Here’s what the magazine says about La Grange, which returns five offensive and seven defensive starters from last year’s team that went 4-6.

“RB/LBs Imhoff and Wilkerson (58 tackles) are a punishing backfield with QB/DB Rogers (637 yards, 5 TDs receiving). OL/DL Woods, OL Splawn lead both lines. LBs Lewis (71 tackles) and Hall, DB/QB Wolff and DB Rodriguez spark the defense.”

Here’s how the magazine sees District 13-2A shaking out:

1. Shiner

2. Schulenburg 3. Ganado

3. Ganado

4. Flatonia

5. Weimar

That’s some high praise for the Shorthorns, who didn’t make the postseason last year but are now picked second only to defending state champ Shiner.

Here’s what the magazine says about Schulenburg, which return nine offensive and nine defense starters from a team that went 4-3 last season:

“The Shorthorns expect to take a big step forward. All-district WR/DB King (632 yards, 9 TDs receiving) could land at QB. WR/DB Johnson (600 yards, 5 TDs) is another all-district player. OL/DLs Schultz and Ricicar are multi-year starters with all-district talent. RB/LB Houston figures to contribute on both sides. OL/DE Meyer returns after a season-ending injury.”

Here’s what the magazine says about Flatonia, which returns eight offensive and nine defensive starters from last year’s 5-4 team.

“With 17 starters back, the Bulldogs hope their 2021 bite is enough to challenge for postseason success in a loaded district. Venegas (234 receiving) moves into the backfield alongside QB/DB Green (544 passing, 53 tackles) and WR/DE Kloesel. RB/LB Gonzales (83 tackles), TE/LB Ramirez (82 tackles), DB Guyton (62 tackles) and OL/DL Ramirez and Walles will be key players. WR/DB Hernandez (3 INTs) brings speed on both sides of the ball.”
