Schulenburg Football Coach Officially Resigns

The Schulenburg ISD Board of Trustees accepted the resignation of head football coach and athletic director Clay Ferguson on Monday, Oct. 19. The resignation is effective Jan. 31, 2027.

Ferguson was in the middle of his second season with the Shorthorns when the school relieved him of coaching duties on Friday, Oct. 2. The Shorthorns were heading into district play with an 0-5 record at the time. They have since lost their first two district games and are now 0-7.

The school did not give a reason for Ferguson’s dismissal at the time. Superintendent Lee Hafley declined to comment on the reason when reached by phone this week.

Donald Zapalac will continue serving as Interim Athletic Director, and Marty Bigham will continue serving as Interim Head Football Coach.

“Our focus remains on supporting our student-athletes and coaches and providing continuity throughout the remainder of the season,” the school said in a statement issued this week. “Thank you for your continued support of our Shorthorns.”
