Supak Called up to the Majors, Briefly

La Grange native Trey Supak was briefly called up to the major leagues for the first time in his career Monday with the Milwaukee Brewers but was sent back down Wednesday before appearing in any games.

The short-lived promotion of Supak was part of a flurry of moves the Brewers had made to shore up their pitching staff amidst injuries and a paternity leave. Supak, 24, has pitched his way through the Brewers minor league system since being acquired along with Keon Broxton from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for Jason Rogers in December 2015.

“Big velocity is something that we like. He throws strikes. Some of the off-speed stuff has improved,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said when Supak was promoted.

Because of the pandemic, and the cancellation of the entire minor league season, Supak has been pitching at the Brewers alternate training site in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Supak has been named the Southern League’s pitcher of the year in 2019 and prior to this season was pitching in Class AAA San Antonio.

Last year Supak went 12-6 with a 3.60 ERA over 27 starts between AA and AAA.

He struck out 118 in 152 innings. A big part of his arsenal is a good sinking fastball that generates a lot of ground balls.

Counsell said, “I think anytime a guy makes it to the big leagues, it’s an enormous step and a lot of people should be proud, from families and coaches along the way for them to our player development staff. They should be thrilled another player has graduated to the major leagues.”
