The 8th grade Leopard football team played a couple of hard fought games last night versus Gonzales.
In the B game, the Leopards pitched a shutout 36-0. Corey Powell started the scoring off in the 1st Qtr with a 40 yard run to the far left. Dalton Landis added the 2 point conversion with a catch from Kyler Lamza. Tye Johnson followed that score with a 25 yard scamper for a 2nd touchdown in the quarter; the 2 pt. conversion failed. The Leps added two more scores in the 2nd Quarter on another Powell run to the left from 18 yards out and on a Johnson to Thiery Ortiz connection for 12 yards. Both conversions were successful through a run by Lamza and a Johnson to Landis pass respectively. The Leopards closed out the scoring on a Leonardo Soto run over the right edge for 80 yards, the conversion failed. The B team defense was again led by strong Defensive Line play from Bage, Kulhanek, and Vasquez and Linebacker Holden Cooper.
The 8th grade A team mixed it up with a very good Apache team and came to a 28-37 decision in favor of Gonzales. Max Dixon hit Kameron Leonard for a 10 yard pass and again for a 2 pt conversion that made the score 15-8 early in the 2nd quarter. Dixon found Elijah Haardt in the endzone, from 12 yards out, as time expired in the first half to bring the Leopards within one, 14-15. The 2 pt conversion failed by inches. In the second half, following an Apache touchdown, Leonard takes the kickoff 85 yards to bring La Grange up 20-22. on a close judgement call, the referees ruled the 2 point conversion no good. The Leopards found themselves down by 17 with time running out and they get a big play with Lakayvion Broussard taking a reverse 40 yards to set up the last score of the night...a 25 yard pass from Dixon to Leonard . Dixon was successful on the 2 pt conversion run. The onside kick failed. Other standouts for La Grange were Julian Sherman in the defensive secondary, Haardt and Dixon at the Linebacker spot, and Jaiden Scott and Hudson Corn on the Defensive Line. With two games left, the Leopards are hoping to change their fortunes next week in Giddings.
