State Champ Schramm Now Keeping the Leps Safe at His Alma Mater

The guy roaming the sidelines keeping Leopard athletes safe knows a thing or two about having success while wearing purple and gold.

Layne Schramm, who is in his first year as the athletic trainer at La Grange ISD, won a pair of state titles as a LHS athlete himself as part of the 2000 Leps state champion football team and the 2001 state champion baseball team.

“It’s great to be back,” Schramm said before a recent football game. Schramm graduated from the University of Texas and then served as assistant athletic trainer at Rice University for five years and also worked for both the Houston Methodist and Austin’s Ascension Seton hospital chains before returning to La Grange.

Any La Grange football fan who has watched the team over the last few years probably saw a lot of players get helped off the field with cramps but that’s seemed to be mostly a thing of the past with Schramm on board.

He claims no special credit, but passes that on to the players, who he said really bought into his urging to stay hydrated, dating back to the preseason. – Jeff Wick
