Led by an Amazing Relay Team, Leps Running for Historic Feats At This Week’s State Track Meet

The 1923 La Grange boys track team captured the school’s only team track championship 98 years ago. The year prior, 1922, the school’s mile relay won state in that event. That team remains the only Leopard boys relay team to ever win a state title. -
La Grange has a history of great sprinters, shown above is Curtis Truesdale, who won the state 100 meter dash in 1992 and 1993 (his 1993 state record of 10.3 stood for 10 years) and below is Lawrance Dobbins, who won the state 100 meter title in 1998. But never before this season has La Grange had four sprinters to put together for such an elite relay team. Record fi le photos -
Sprinting Towards History? -
Other than the 1922 boys mile relay team, the only other La Grange relay team to win a state title was the 1980 La Grange girls 4x100 relay. Front to back, that team included Sharon Kovar, Charlene Grant, Sheila Willrich and Debra Scott. Grant would win state titles the next two years in individual events. Kovar would later coach the school’s softball team to a state title in 2005. Record fi le photos
The La Grange boys have not won a relay state title in track in 99 years.
That could change Thursday when a special foursome of Leopards take the track in Austin.
And they have not one, but two, chances to make school history.
The La Grange boys haven’t brought home relay gold since the La Grange mile relay team did so back in 1922. Only once have the Lady Leps done so, the 1980 4x100 relay.
