Schulenburg’s Season Ends With Loss to No. 1-ranked Shiner

The Schulenburg high school football team faced off against an undefeated Shiner team Friday night in their last game of the season and fell short with a final score of 48-21.

The loss ends the Shorthorns season with a 4-3 overall record and a 1-3 mark in district.

Even though it wasn’t the ending result the Shorthorns wanted, first year head coach Walt Brock seemed confident about the future.

“We got kids who want to learn how to win,” said Brock.

“For now, we’ve got to get started on offseason, which I haven’t got to have with these kids. We got to get them in the weight room, we got to get them running. We’re getting a lot of kids back. That’s what people don’t understand. I can’t tell you how proud I am of the seniors, how I’m proud of everybody that played tonight, how young we were this year. We don’t give up and we fight through it.”

For Shiner, this is their second consecutive undefeated regular season under head coach Daniel Boedeker.

“We were blessed to be able to be out here every week”, Boedeker said. “We have a talented bunch of kids that work really hard. Once they gave us the OK to go back to work in the summer, we had the biggest turnouts for summer workouts. The work ethic continued on through two-a-days. We went through a tough pre-district schedule to get us ready for this tough district that we’re in. Right now, I can’t say enough about these guys and their effort they put forth so far.”

The Comanches also have a pair of brothers who carry division 1 football offers. Junior running back and defensive tackle Douglas Brooks has an offer from the University of Houston and sophomore Dalton Brooks, who’s also a running back and plays free safety on defense, has an offer from the University of Texas.

“We came in with a purpose in the summer,” said Douglas Brooks. “We had our head on straight.”

The Brooks brothers took turns at running back on the night. Douglas Brooks found the end zone with 53 seconds to spare in the first half on a 10 yard run to put his team up 28-7.

Dalton Brooks also had an efficient outing on the ground, making an impressive hurdle over a defender in the second half, gaining a few extra yards on the play.

“We just come out here and do what we do best, play football,” Dalton Brooks said.

The Comanches started out hot from the very beginning, capitalizing on their run game with a 40 yard run to the Schulenburg eight yard line, which was finished off on a quarterback run from senior Tyler Palmer to go up 7-0 with just under 10 minutes to play in the first quarter.

Schulenburg then fumbled from their own three yard line on their opening possession, which was recovered by Shiner and followed up with another quarterback keeper from Palmer to take an assuring 14-0 lead. The Shorthorns answered

The Shorthorns answered back at the start of the second quarter with a halfback sweep play for a touchdown to cut the Shiner lead to 14-7. Shiner continued with the ground and pound running style that made for another rushing touchdown along with Brooks’ lone touchdown to put the Comanches ahead 28-7 at halftime.

Schulenburg continued to battle with their passing game in the third quarter, tossing it all the way down to the Shiner red zone and capping off an impressive drive with a five yard running touchdown from senior quarterback Brett Janecek to make it a 28-14 contest with 5:13 to go in the period.

Shiner answered back with a long kickoff return from Douglas Brooks to the Shorthorns 24 yard line and a 21 yard touchdown run from Palmer, adding the lead to 21 for a 35-14 ballgame. The Comanches continued to pour it on with their run attack in the fourth quarter and drew up a 16 yard rushing touchdown from senior running back Trevor Haynes to go up 42-14. Schulenburg didn’t go home without a fight as junior wide-receiver Kenny King made two long, spectacular catches to set up a seven yard rushing touchdown of his own to put 21 points on the board.

Shiner closed out the night with yet another quarterback running touchdown from Palmer with about four minutes left to secure a 48-21 win and the team’s second consecutive undefeated season.
